Their Compassion and Unselfishness is to be commended! WES is very proud of these two Students. (Kudo’s information courtesy of Board Secretary Sandra Strickland) ------ C. Transportation Report: Transportation Supervisor, Mr. L.R. Kemp, gave the Board a brief report, covering the Transportation Department’s activities. He proudly stated that the Department is NOT wasting any money, and had in fact, actually returned part of its budget. “SAFETY”, he said was the #1 Priority. The District’s buses had covered an average of 112,000 miles per year. The bus routes cover three (3) counties and some roads; particularly in Hopkins County, are very hard on the buses. They maintain 20 buses, 16 vehicles, 1 backhoe, and several self-propelled lawn mowers. Upkeep includes: tires, oil changes, brakes, and both major and minor repairs. The District has four (4) different brand buses: Carpenter, Thomas, Blue Bird, and International. The Transportation Dept. is trying to stay with the International buses, for standardization and ease of parts availability. Carpenter no longer makes buses, and it has become very difficult to get parts. Transportation personnel have had to reengineer some buses to keep them working. Six (6) of the District’s buses are not road-worthy for long trips. Transportation is provided to the District for: Extra Curricular / Administrative trips (including athletic, band, field-trips, etc.), Teacher and Administrator mileage, 21st Century / “Outsmarter”, (Programs serving MMS children who stay for tutorials. In the month of June, the District also picks up and takes home these Students), & WES tutorials. --- (NOTE: Superintendent Bosold stated that the District was seeking to buy another bus this year.) ------ D. Curriculum Report: MMS One-Act Play Presentation: The Board was presented a scene from the one-act play: “The Terezin Promise”, by Celeste Raspant. A true story of the liberation of a concentration camp, told from the children’s point of view. As the Nazis begin their final retreat, the imprisoned children desperately seek to preserve suitcases full of pictures and poems made by the children at the camp; while the Nazis try to destroy the evidence of the camp. It is a touching story of Life and Hope. On May 8, 1945 Terezin was liberated. The Children succeeded, and the material is now housed in a museum in Poland. The Play won first place in the District’s UIL competition. The MMS Students competed against four (4) other schools. TIFFANY GAMBREL was named as Best Actress and DILLON IVEY as Best Actor. Those honors rarely go to the same play. Also, CASSIA ROSE was named to the All-Star Cast. KAYLYN KNIGHT and PRESTON McELYEA received Honorable Mention. The Cast Members performing for the Board included: TIFFANY GAMBREL, RAYGAN MILLS, LARAMIE HENSON, CHASE WOOD, CASSIA ROSE, and KIRBY GALLOWAY. ------ E. Plaque Presentation by the Board to: Outgoing President Don Beaty: Don received a standing ovation, as he was given a plaque by Superintendent Bosold, for his Eleven (11) years of faithful service, Five (5) years of which, serving as Board President. As Bosold said: “Winnsboro truly has a better tomorrow, because of the dedication and hard work of Don Beaty!” Mr. Beaty mentioned that he felt it was all worth-it, as he watches the Graduating Seniors of WISD walk across the stage. 6. Items of New Business: ------ A. Consider / Action on Request to transfer $34,000 from the Food Service Reserve for a 12’ X 20” Walk-In Freezer Purchase and Installation; for the High School Cafeteria, including required plumbing, electrical, and concrete costs. (BACKGROUND: The High School Cafeteria has never had a large commercial freezer. Instead, surplus frozen foods were stored in the Elementary freezer and transported as needed. Not only is there a need for onsite storage, but frozen foods have had to be stored offsite, at a local business when the Elementary freezer required repair. The additional freezer will provide backup space if another freezer fails. The freezer will be purchased through the Region 7 Purchasing Cooperative.) --- As Recommended: APPROVED 7.
