The week between Christmas and New Year's is usually a time for journalists to reflect on the highlights of the year about to end and perhaps offer a few thoughts about the new one about to begin.

On a grand, important scale, I would have to say that the progress toward a peaceful co-existence of the factions in Iraq is a highlight worth noting. Not that I agree with the war and the way our military was marched into this war, but as so many soldiers have said, "Since we're there, we might as well do it right."

Recent reports out of Iraq indicate that the people there are starting to band together to fight the insurgents and appear more ready to take over controlling the violence. And I say, "Good for them." Let's just hope that the progress continues and the Coalition troops can go home.

On the political front, I can't say that I am thrilled with "politics as usual" when it comes to the major players in this presidential race -- which started WAY too soon for most of us -- but I am excited about the potential for someone like Congressman Ron Paul to gain support through unique channels. He was actively using the Internet before some of the other candidates had a strong presence there, and in a December 7 Internet caucus dominated the GOP and "Open" caucuses. He has also set records for raising financial support via the Internet.

Is there hope that someday -- soon -- the entire political system could be overhauled and candidates could run Online? Imagine how much money could be saved. Imagine how many more people would not throw large objects at their televisions when one more political ad airs. Imagine people voting because of what a candidate stands for, not because of a charismatic personality and excellent campaign strategy.

Closer to home, here in Winnsboro, Texas, there have been a few good things to mention. The success of the First Annual Community Day -- major Grants for the city -- new businesses opening -- a great football season for the Red Raiders -- and a successful year at the Trails Country Centre For the Arts.

So much of what has been good for Winnsboro came through a spirit of cooperation between people and organizations, and I am proud of what has been accomplished. I hope the spirit of cooperation continues and look forward to all the good things to come in 2008.
